Abstract

Language change provides strong evidence that the various components of language are crucially interdependent: phonological changes can lead to morphological and syntactic changes, lexical changes like borrowing can lead to phonological changes. The traces left by changes in languages allow historical linguists to assemble cognates in two or more languages, establish sets of form correspondences, and reconstruct the forms of the parent language. From this evidence they can determine historical relations between languages within a language family and reconstruct earlier protolanguages, which provide insights into the cultures and relations of prehistorical people.
